I got hooked on my single-serve coffee maker, especially since I work from home and need a good cup of coffee every once in awhile.  Unfortunately coffee pods are getting more and more difficult to find here in Canada as most of the retailers have pulled them off the shelves.  The old standby for us was the Folgers HomeCafe pods, which have since been discontinued in Canada.  I called P&G (who makes Folgers and is coincidentally a previous employer of mine) to check on the status and yes they are gone for good in Canada due to limited demand.  They’re sending me out a customer service pack including a few extra pods and I’m sure some other niceties (P&G customer service is excellent that way).  But as far as getting their pods in the future, I’m SOL.
So then I called Melitta, who sells the OneToOne pods that we had sometimes used even though they were slightly more expensive.  They have not discontinued the product in Canada, but most of the major retailers have stopped carrying them so they’re effectively only available by calling Melitta customer service which is a pain.
So my search for an alternative supplier began, and I came across a coffee distributer in the GTA that sells reasonably-priced and good quality coffee pods.  The name of the distributer is Play Fair Coffee and they operate a store in Brampton as well as an eBay store that will ship anywhere in Canada.  I got myself a mixed pack of the Distinctively Yours pods and have so far fallen in love with the Serengetti coffee.  They also sell Higgins & Burke pods for about a buck more per box, but I think I’ll stick with the Distinctively Yours brand for now.  Once I finish the sample pack I’ll choose my favorite and order a 100-pack which is reasonable priced at $26 online and a bit less if you pick it up at the store in Brampton.

Comments:

Hey, goods infos! I just tried last week to order pods from the 1to1 website, which worked a couple of monts ago, but now my order has been cancelled twice…! Anyhow, I’ll check your recommendations. Thanks!

Hi Pete- I was searching for article about MCE fix for CTV reception and I came across your block. I was wondering about your fix to get CTV to working in MCE. I have ATI HDTV wonder in my machine.

Steve

Thanks for the info. I too am so frustrated about the lack of coffee pods here in Canada. I live in Grande Prairie, Alberta. I too bought the Distinctively Yours from Playfair but I did not care the them. I tried the Cafe Roast, I found them a little harsh. I was hooked on Fogers 100% Columbian, which we loved but as you know have been discontinuted. It sucks that they did that. Anyway can you tell me if you can suggest a Distinctively Yours blend that is close to the Folgers. They sent me samples and I found most of them too harsh tasting. We have a Senseo machinine which I ordered last Feb. from Ebay. I love it but not pods for it. Please let me know.

Brenda, if you got the sample pack from them you probably have tried everything I have. I do have a box of Higgins and Burke 1912 blend that I’ll crack open and try for you, it’s the mildest H&B pod that playfair had.
I assume you tried the DY Columbian pod? I found them too bitter for my taste but thought I’d check to make sure that was in your sample pack.

Yes I too tried the Columbian and found it bitter, as a matter of fact at first I ordered 100 of them and I sent it back and changed it for the Cafe roast, which I now don’t like either. I think I am going to try out the Serengetti and you can let me how how you liked the Higgins and Burke. Thanks for replying.

You should order the 20 pod sample pack if you haven’t already, it has a bit of everything. The Serengetti and the Cafe Roast are somewhat similar actually, with my preference being towards the Serengeti.
I brewed a cup of H&B 1912 Blend today and it is still very flavourful but doesn’t have quite the “bite” of the House Blend so you might like it. If I recall correctly I found the Costa Rican DY pods a bit weak, so that might get you closer to the lighter flavour you’re looking for.

You mentioned the Play Fair coffee was $26 for $l00. The website states $60 for 100. Which is correct?

Thanks for sharing! I knew there had to be others out there with the same problem I was having. I actually own 2 one:one machines (home & office) and was beginning to feel that I had basically bought 2 “disposable” products. I actually just e-mailed Melitta Canada as their website for the one:one directs you to the US site and everything there says for US use only…Not very impressed with the whole situation.

Thanks for the info. I have one machine at work, one at home, and have recommended this machine to about 5 other people who now have it. I couldn’t find the pods anywhere, so figured when I ran out of the ones I had now, the machine would be no good. I just ordered from Melitta Canada direct - before I checked this site. They will ship out the pods for no charge - but you have to buy 12 boxes at a time. I called them - I didn’t try ordering off the net. I will try play fair coffee next time. THANKS

Here is another source for coffee pods. Wee bit more expensive than what you state for bulk, but with 10% off for repeat orders, works out to about $7.30 per 18.

Good selection. I tried Melitta and Timothys and prefer these.

Might want to try just a single box and see what you think.
